Q: how many quarts of automatic transmission fluid (ATF) do I put in my 2000 honda odyssey?

A: You don't say how many miles are on it or if it has ever been changed before. The manual may say to change it at 120,000 miles but if it has never been done before that then you need to drain and refill it multiple time in an effort to get most of the old fluid out because more than half of the old fluid stays in the transmission with each drain and fill. So you will need to drain it and refill it about 4 times, one right after the other with a brief driving period between each drain an refill. Another option that a lot of dealers recommend is simply to drain and refill it once every 30,000 miles. 3.1 quarts for a drain and refill. Use ONLY Honda fluid.

Q: re: 2000 honda odyssey, are there different types of atf trans fluids, which one should be used?

A: Use Honda ATF.For the benefit of the transmission.

Q: How much should new brakes and resurfaced rotors cost?
I was quoted $400 for new brakes, resurfaced rotors, spark plugs and new belts for my 2000 Honda Odyssey. I don't know if this is a reasonable price or not. If you are qualified, can you help me know? Thanks.

A: That sounds reasonable to me. I just paid $650 for new pads (although mine are ceramic), resurfaced rotors, brake line bleeding, and a rebuild of my calipers.

Q: Is the scanner enough to detect an auto transmission problem?
My 2000 Honda Odyssey had the Check Engine lit and the shift to the 2nd gear was getting worse each day. These symptoms were provided to the shop but they refuse to give me an estimate based on the scan result.

A: A scanner will give a technician a lot of information, point him/her in the right direction, but is NOT by any means a guaranteed diagnosis! A scan Tool indicates there is a problem in a particular circuit of the transmission. It could be a sensor problem, a wiring problem (chaffed or corroded wire, or a loose terminal), bad ground circuit, or even the computer itself. This is where diagnostics come into play. Once you know what area the problem lies, then the technician must eliminate "known good" parts of the circuit. This will generally lead to the proper diagnosis ( what is actually defective) and the subsequent repair. Also, with transmission problems, a technician normally does several pressure tests to test for internal transmission leakage, like bad piston seals or overheated clutch packs. The Torque converter must also be checked for "stall speed" and proper "Lock-up" operation. So to answer your question, a scan tool is very useful in diagnosing a problem, but does NOT necessarily tell you exactly what is wrong with the vehicle, just a direction to work towards. BTW, sorry for jareiharts' ( aka ticklemetimbers) crude comment below, I don't know what he's got against me, but he insults me constantly. He is nothing more than a troll. Please report him!

Q: How many miles/months before the next oil change after synthetic oil change?
I just got an oil change my 2000 Honda Odyssey using Synthetic oil.. How many miles/months before the next change? Walmart Oil and Lube says 3-4 months or 5k. Clic and Clack (Tom and Ray Magliozzi) of Cartalk.com say regular oil changes (non-synthetic) should be in 5kmiles/6 months intervals. I have normal driving conditions where I am. I also drive the right way: no quick acceleration, no sudden brakes. Thanks.

A: Good synthetic oil is good for 5,000 miles. Make sure you also change the filter.

Q: Is it a bad idea to leave my car parked over snow for two months?
I am going on vacation for two months and I wanted to shovel out a spot in my driveway to leave my car. I took the battery out and put it on a tender and ran stable through the car. If I leave the car over snow cover, the snow ill melt and the water evaporates. Will this rust the crap out of the bottom of my car?? 2000 Honda Odyssey

A: You'll be fine. 2 Months is not a long period of time, plus car dealers leave invintory outside (here in buffalo) for months on end - no cover, no anything. A little snow wont hurt your car.

Q: Pros and cons for Pajero vs Odyssey?
Considering to purchase a second hand minivan, particularly between Mitsubishi Pajero NM GLS year 2000 vs Honda Odyssey 2002. Could anyone advise pros and cons for these cars? Thanks.

A: pajeros a 4wd, so good for offroading. odyssey will be cheaper to run and service because it isn't 4wd. so it depends what you want it for. i would think they'd both be fairly reliable.

Q: Is that usual a torque converter to be defective?
My 2000 Honda Odyssey had the transmission rebuilt at 62kmiles. They charged me $ 364.00 for the torque converter, besides they gave me the old parts excepet the torque converter. Am I being cheated?

A: The torque converter is usually not the fault of the automatic transmission failure. Most reputable shops present the used parts with the repair, but they might have disposed of this and recycled the fluid. The torque converter is full of automatic transmission fluid and will leak large amounts of oil (a few quarts of crimson red oil). The transmission failure surely circulated debris from the failure throughout the transmission, including the torque converter, making a failure of the new transmission more likely if the old torque converter was reinstalled. I would replace the torque converter every time after a transmission failure.

Q: Thin metal inside a groove of disk pad caliper?
I am not sure what those metals named or called, when I tried to replace the disc pads for my honda Odyssey 2000 2.3 L I found that there are thin metals inside a groove of each caliper. Two of these metals got damaged, if I did not use them, would that affect the performance of the brakes ? Thanks

A: They are shims. Depending on which shims you did NOT use, you can have noisy brakes, or brake lockup. Good Luck...
